With over 60 admission free exhibitions, performances and events taking place over 18 days across Glasgow, Glasgow International or GI is the largest festival for contemporary visual art in Scotland. The 2020 festival – the second under Richard Parry’s direction, and the ninth edition – was postponed due to the ongoing health crisis, but an online programme was made available, featuring new commissions and work scheduled for the 2020 festival. The 2021 edition dates have been announced: Fri 11 – Sun 27 Jun.
The website features additional material including an audio introduction to the Festival by Richard Parry, and a recorded panel discussion between Parry, curator Stefanie Hessler and writers Brian Dillon and Orit Gat, exploring the ways in which the resonance of the festival’s theme of has changed in light of the health crisis. With its theme of attention, the 2021 edition, aims to be ‘a crescendo in the creative rhythm of the city, a concentrated instance that opens up a space for relearning and recovering the stretches of time before, during and beyond it. Attention seeks to step outside the everyday and open up a new space for looking, thinking and spending time with the work of artists and to see afresh the intent behind the work.’
A Commissioned Programme of exhibitions will take place in many of the city’s best-known venues, alongside the Across the City programme, selected from proposals by artists, arts organisations, curators and producers who live and work in Glasgow. Additionally, the Festival will also present a Digital Programme, giving artists an alternative space in which to present work.
